ultiM4tes

"ultiM4TES" is an outdoor mixed-gender league designed for maximum participation by all players on the field. Its 4-a-side beginner-friendly approach focuses on creating a fun environment for players and places a strong emphasis on the social aspect of the game.

Games are played with 4 players on the field at once with a 2:2 male match-up: female match-up ratio. Substitutions are allowed during the game so having approximately 8 people on a team (four male matchups and four female matchups) will enable each player to sub for a rest.

Who is ultiM4tes for?

ultiM4TES is geared towards people who:

  • are trying out Ultimate for the first time.

  • enjoy playing Ultimate but have limited time

  • use Ultimate to have a run around with friends or to stay active on a weekly basis.

If you're reading this and thinking "that doesn't sound like a competitive enough league for me" or "I'm already a super skilled player,  beginners wouldn't stand a chance",  this league is the perfect opportunity to get together with some friends, family, or workmates, who may have minimal or even no ultimate experience and have a blast teaching others about the best sport in the world!

If you'd like assistance signing up or have additional questions feel free to contact us

    • Season 1 2026: Monday 23rd February - Monday 30 March

  • Ultim4tes will run on Monday nights, 6-8 pm. There will be two rounds of games each night. Each game will have two 20 minute halves with a 5 minute halftime.

  • You'll need to register (more details on that later)

The only gear you'll need is:

    • A pair of shoes - ideally rugby or football boots since the turf gets a little slippery when wet

    • 2 sports shirts/singlets (one light, one dark) - Bibs will be available if needed

    • Water bottle - staying hydrated is key to enjoying ultimate

    • Raincoat or warm layers in case of poor weather - Thanks to the multisport turf we won't be cancelling due to weather unless it's a truly grim forecast

  • The team fee for this league is $250 per team.

Payments are to be made via Bank transfer to Manawatu Ultimate Association (03 1523 0013200 00), with your Team name and Ultim4tes as reference

  • Games are based on the rules of play for standard ultimate frisbee, but with a smaller team size and smaller field. Other rules variations:

    • Length of games: 40-minute games, five-minute half time with 20-minute halves. Game ends on the horn (result of a pass in the air as the horn blows counts).

    • ‘Dropped pull is not a turnover’: Don’t be afraid to catch the pull. If a drop occurs, play-on from wherever the disc was last touched.

    • ‘Rolling Subs’ – must ‘tag’ out when substituting

    • ‘Bricks’ are taken from the centre of the field

    • ‘Stall count’ is 10 seconds

  • The health and safety of all participants is both a priority of this league, and a shared responsibility between those participants. Teams should familiarise themselves with our Safety Action Plan and raise any issues with the onsite coordinator promptly.

  • An onsite coordinator will be present every week to provide onsite support. The onsite coordinator (Jonas Holman) will be able to assist you with field equipment, league information, basic first aid supplies, game times, and to help resolve any disputes or issues.

Teams are responsible for providing first aid to their players where required. Basic first aid supplies (ice packs/bandages/slings) will be available onsite, obtainable through the onsite coordinator.

  • A prize giving event will be held following the conclusion of the league, Date and Time TBC. Prizes will be awarded to the champion team, most spirited team, male MVP, and female MVP of the league.

  • All players registered for this league are immediately considered members of New Zealand Ultimate. Team fees are inclusive of a $25 levy per team, collected by MUA on behalf of players and paid to New Zealand Ultimate.

With the above information, you have everything you need to play an enjoyable and competitive outdoor frisbee game! While there are so many other things you can learn such as different throws, advanced rules, hand signals and weird frisbee terminology, the best way to go from here is to play and enjoy the game with others.
