Kings and Queens
“Kings and Queens” is a casual mixed outdoor ultimate league that aims to provide a structured social setting for all players, regardless of experience, to play together in a fair and well-spirited environment.
Players in attendance are sorted randomly into teams using Matt’s computational algorithm designed to balance player experience, ability, and preferred gender match-up. Less-experienced players will have the opportunity to learn from others, while those with more experience have the chance to develop their game by playing with different assortments of teammates.
Over the course of a season, players gain points based on the performance and spirit of all the teams they played for. The Open and Female match-up players with the best points at the end of the season are crowned King and Queen of the league. Points gained by those who remain uncrowned go towards entries into a prize raffle on coronation night.
While open to all ages, this league is most suitable to Adult and late-Highschool players.

Kings and Queens offers two 45min games per night where players have the flexibility to participate in both or either one of the games if they arrive and present to the coordinator before team generation. Those who arrive after team generation will not be eligible to play in that game.
A typical night will follow this schedule:
-
6pm: Lights turn on. Players arrive, make themselves known to the coordinator(s) and warm up.
-
6:10pm: Teams are generated for Game 1. Players are informed of their team allocation.
-
6:15pm: Game 1 begins.
-
7pm: Game 1 finishes. Spirit circles commence.
-
7:10pm: New arrivals, and departures present to the coordinator(s). Teams are generated for Game 2.
-
7:15pm: Game 2 begins.
-
8pm: Game 2 finishes. Spirit circles and post-ultimate yarns commence.
-
Players are advised to bring both a light and a dark shirt to aid in team assignment. Cleats (non-metal) and water are also highly encouraged.
Players are charged a maximum cost of $5 per night attended this season. As the algorithm monitors attendance, players are informed via email of their total owing balance after the season has concluded.
These rules are to be treated as an addendum to the current WFDF ultimate frisbee rules. Deviations made by this league are listed below:
-
Games are 45 minutes in length with no half-time.
-
Each team has one 90 second timeout per game. Timeouts can only be called in-between points (before the pull is made) and cannot be called in the last 10 minutes of the game.
-
Discs which are released before the final hooter finishes are still considered live and can be scored from.
-
Due to number of players in attendance, number of active players and field size may be adjusted.
-
After a game finishes, each team will discuss spirit scores for their opposition prior to the post-game chat. This enables any spirit issues to be mentioned in the post-game chat and thus to be learnt from.
Spirit scores will contain five 0-4 scores for the following categories: rules knowledge and use, fouls and body contact, fair-mindedness, positive attitude and self-control, and communication. The rubric for determining the 0-4 scores for each category can be found at the end of this document.
Individual players are awarded K&Q points, for every game they play, from both their game result and team spirit score received. Points awarded from game result are: 1 point for a loss by 3 or more, 1.5 points for a loss by less than 3, 2 points for a draw, 2.5 points for a win by less than 3, and 3 points for a win by 3 or more. Points awarded from team total spirit score received are: 1 point for a total spirit score of 8 or less, 1.5 points for a total of 9, 2 points for a total of 10, 2.5 points for a total of 11, and 3 points for a total of 12 or more.
Players who have not paid for a previous season of the league will not be awarded K&Q points until they have paid.
After the final game of the season, King and Queen are selected from the Open and Female match-up preferred players with the best X games of points (X is roughly 70% of total games in the season). This gives players the opportunity to miss a couple weeks/games and still be in contention for royalty. Tiebreakers will be decided by highest average spirit score.
Those who remain uncrowned after coronation have their points count as entries to the prize raffle. Therefore, the more points you earn the greater your probability of getting to select a prize.
